Fiachra Ó Céilleachair, Comhalta Údarás na Gaeltachta

Fiachra O'Ceilleachair

A new Board for Údarás na Gaeltachta – the state agency for the economic and social development of localities in seven counties where Irish is a community language – was announced by the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht Donnchadh Mac Fhionnlaoich TD in November 2012. Previously, 17 Board positions were decided by public elections and a further three members (including the Chairperson) were appointed by the Minister. Following the implementation of the Gaeltacht Act 2012, membership of the Údarás Board has been reduced to 12 and a new system of selection applies. Seven County Councils determine five positions and the remaining seven are appointed by the Minister. Fiachra Ó Céilleachair – who had served two terms between 1999 and September 2012 as the elected representative for the Ring and Old Parish Gaeltachts in Co. Waterford – is among Minister Mac Fhionnlaoich’s appointments to the new Board. Four of the County Council nominated positions on the new Údarás Board are filled by representatives chosen by members of Donegal, Galway, Kerry and Mayo County Councils respectively. A fifth seat during the five year term will rotate, in turn, between Meath, Cork and Waterford County Councils. It is open to the local authorities to nominate one of its own Councillors or a member of the public (the latter is currently the case with the Donegal, Mayo and Meath nominees on the new Board) to serve as a representative on their behalf. The Chairperson of the Údarás Board is Anna Ní Ghallachóir, who is the Director of the Language Centre at National University of Ireland in Maynooth, Co. Kildare but is a native of Árainn Mhór island in Co. Donegal. Féadfar a thuile eolas d'fháil ar Údarás na Gaeltachta ag
