Mayor Lawlor launches Annual Childrens Play Day
Issued : Tuesday 17 July, 2007
Areas : Wexford
Fellow Councillors, local residents, parents and especially all the children here today it gives me great pleasure to officially open the Wexford 2007 play day at Redmond Park. Following on from last years successful initiative the children stated it was a great day and requested that the play day become an annual event.
Wexford Borough Council with Wexford County Council, RAPID and the County Childcare Committee have worked together to implement the Play Day as part of the County Development Board's Play Policy in raising awareness of the importance of play.
Since the National Children's Strategy was launched, Wexford Local Authorities have more than trebled the number of playground facilities in the County over the past four years through local authority funding and RAPID. This is a significant achievement and recognises the importance of play as an essential component in the learning and development of children.
Through play children develop independence, self awareness and learn social and problem solving skills. The provision of playground facilities, the publication of a play resource booklet, hosting of an annual play day and the implementation of the County Play Policy illustrate some of the measures the CDB, Local Authorities, RAPID and County Childcare Committee's have undertaken to enhancing public play opportunities for children.
The play day will host a wide range of play activities for both younger and older children including story telling, arts and crafts, a treasurer hunt, face painting, scouts table, tag rugby and much more.
I would like to extend my thanks to the organisers and helpers on the day especially all the volunteers who have supported the local authorities, RAPID and County Childcare Committee in hosting the day. Finally I encourage parents and children to enjoy the day and most important of all to have fun.
