Boxing Club funding will support more Katie Taylor's

Issued : Tuesday 16 April, 2013

I welcome the announcement by the Minister for Sport, Leo Varadkar, of funding to upgrade boxing clubs around the country. As a nation, We pare all so proud of the medals that Bray’s own Katie Taylor has brought home. Her achievements and those of our local boxing heroes Ken Egan and Bernard Dunne can be replicated by support for Amateur boxing clubs in local communities. The funding then, of €1 million, to upgrade boxing club facilities throughout the State, will support more young boxers to achieve their goals. The money has been made available to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and clubs can apply directly to this organization. I hope more women follow In Katie's footsteps and suceed in boxing. Katie Taylor has led the way in this sport, and I believe that with her example, and enough resources, we can add to our haul of Olympic boxing champions.
