Cllr Joanna Tuffy
Spokesperson on Affordable Housing, Dáil by-election candidate for Dublin Mid West

Issued : Monday 8 June, 2015

Joanna Tuffy TD (Labour) has welcomed the plans by Irish Distillers for 30 new jobs announced at its bottling facility at the Fox and Geese, Clondalkin, this week.

This announcement follows recent new jobs announced for the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre and at Park West and Citywest.

These local job announcements are a great boost for the community of Clondalkin. The Clondalkin Social Welfare office saw the numbers on the Live Register on peak at just under 10,000 in 2011. The current numbers on the Live Register at Clondalkin Social Welfare office is 6819. This is a drop of a third.

Nationwide unemployment has also dropped by one third from 15.1% at its peak in 2012 to 9.8% today. 100,000 more people are at work in the country since the beginning of 2012. This is not due to Labour Market Activation Schemes as claimed by some commentators. The numbers on schemes including Jobbridge, TUS and CE has not increased greatly since 2012 when it was 82,162 people and its current number of 88,398.

There are people who lost their jobs during the recession getting real jobs. This decision by Irish Distillers to expand and create new jobs is another good sign that our economy is recoverinng.
