Lucan swimming pool project gets big boost with re-opening of swimming pool grant funding
Issued : Friday 22 January, 2016
Dublin Mid West Labour Party TD Joanna Tuffy has welcomed the announcement that the Government has re-opened the Grant Programme for the funding of a small number of public swimming pools. Deputy Tuffy is confident that an application from South Dublin County Council will be successful.
Deputy Tuffy commented: “Great credit is due to the Lobby for a Public Swimming Pool for Lucan... Campaign and in particular Helen Farrell and Sandra Whelan for their initiative in the last year with this community based campaign. The collection of thousands of signatures in Lucan has confirmed the support of Lucan residents for a local pool in a town with 46 000 people.
“The Lucan Swimming Pool project has been on the agenda for years, despite the closing of the programme by the previous Fianna Fianna government, given the state of readiness of the Council, which has already worked on preliminary planning of the pool, I am confident that an application to the re-opened programme will be successful. I know that the Council CEO and his staff will pull out all the stops to get a quality application in before the Closing Date of 29th January 2016.
“With the boost given to the pool project by the work of the local campaign, I raised the issue of a pool for Lucan on many occasions in the Dail, and got information showing that throughout the country funding had been approved under the previous programme for 58 pools , many for towns with a much smaller population than Lucan.
“The decision of the Council to restore the swimming pool to the Council’s Capital Programme last month was an important step, and I commend Lucan councillors for their commitment.”
