Issued : Tuesday 3 March, 2015

Labour Senator John Kelly has welcomed the announcement by Minister of State for Tourism & Sport, Michael Ring TD, of funding of €7,500 for festivals and events taking place in Roscommon this year.

"The Tain March is to receive €2,500, Percy French week will get €2,000, The O'Carolan Harp & Traditional Music Festival receives €2,000, while the Carrick Water Music Festival gets €1,000" according to Kelly.

Minister Ring stated that the funding announced would allow local communities to broaden their appeal to overseas visitors who will be able to experience everything from culture and sport, to festivals and fun, these events being the lifeblood of tourism for many local communities and give tourists compelling reasons to explore rural Ireland.

Shaun Quinn, CEO of Fáilte Ireland added that the importance of festivals for Ireland should not be underestimated, saying: ‘Festivals and events complement the beauty of our

landscapes and the friendliness of our people with a rich variety of spectacle and experiences. These events will provide the backbone to the tourism calendar in communities

throughout the country and add to our ability to grow overseas visitors and revenue.”

Senator Kelly concluded by saying that the local festivals and events which will benefit from the Failte Ireland approved funding are a vital cog in the ongoing effort to highlight what Roscommon has to offer as a place to visit and enjoy.
