36 NEW ROOMS FOR DEISE SCHOOLS AFTER PREFABS TORN DOWN - PRATT

36 new permanent rooms have been provided to Waterford schools in 2012 and 2013 under the prefab replacement scheme, according to Cllr. John Pratt.

20 of these are mainstream classrooms, while the other 16 are being used for other purposes, such as resource learning and educating children with special needs. Overall, 560 students in the county have benefitted from the scheme.

Cllr. Pratt says: “Since coming into government Labour has been committed to replacing prefabs with mainstream permanent classrooms. These figures show the progress that has been made in Waterford so far. In 2012 and 2013, 36 new rooms were built for schools here, of which 20 were classrooms.

“Building permanent classrooms offers a double benefit - providing a warmer, safer environment for children can learn, and reduces the amount of money we spend renting prefabs each year.

“As well as building new classrooms, we have also managed to provide other facilities such as resource rooms and other spaces for children with special needs. This is a sign of Labour’s commitment to quality education facilities in Waterford.”
