Minister Kathleen Lynch Welcomes €1.5 Billion School Investment Programme
Issued : Monday 12 March, 2012
Labour Minister of State Kathleen Lynch has welcomed the announcement of a five year school building and renovation programme. The investment will cater for the increase of 70,000 in our pupil numbers which is forecast over the coming years and will cost €1.5 Billion. There are 275 projects in total, 157 of which are new schools and the remainder, 114, are renovations to existing schools.
The announcement of extensions to Glanmire Community College and St Angela's Secondary School is particularly welcome as these have been needed for some time. In addition, there will be a brand new special school at Lota in Glanmire.
This building programme will not only provide for our growing population but will also create thousands of much needed jobs in the construction sector over the course of the five year programme. This is an investment in our future and will result in over 11% of the total school population benefiting from new permanent places delivered during the period 2012 to 2016.
