Growing Public Confidence in Labour
Brendan Howlin TD, Party Leader
Labour has at every opportunity expressed no confidence in the current government, for very good reasons. But I do have confidence in Labour’s ability to offer a real alternative to the current do-nothing partnership between Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Independent Alliance.
In the recent by-elections, we got 14.2% of all first preference votes cast, we got the third highest vote of all Parties. A huge thank you to everyone who helped Joanna, John, Duncan and George run energetic campaigns.
Since 2016, we have had several important referendums, the campaign to re-elect Michael D Higgins and the local elections and with each campaign we can feel the reception on the doors get warmer. Why not think of making it your resolution for early 2020 to get involved with your local Labour General Election candidate’s campaign?
When it comes to the general election, our clear message will be that it is time for real change, to build an equal society. Independent Ireland was not meant to be a place where the rich got richer and the poor got poorer, but that has happened under this government, despite the economic recovery. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are making all the wrong choices when it comes to housing, healthcare, childcare and the other pressures that are affecting working families. It is time for a government that will take radical steps to raise wages, improve job security and make sure people can afford housing once again.
I wish you and your family a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas break. I look forward to meeting many of you on the campaign trail next year, whenever the election comes.
