Congratulations and thank you to our candidates and their teams for their excellent campaigns in the recent by-elections. In each of the four Constituencies we delivered a significant increase in our vote share compared with the last general election. George Lawlor and his team finished second in Wexford and Duncan Smith a close third in Fingal, both constituencies where we have sitting TD’s. In Cork, John Maher came a strong 4 th in the 4 seater constituency finishing ahead of the Green Party and the Solidarity candidates. In Dublin Mid-West Joanna Tuffy continued to build on her strong local election performance finishing ahead of Green Party, Social Democrats and Solidarity candidates in a crowded field.

Each of the campaigns displayed a level of hard work, commitment and energy that were apparent to everyone involved and to the wider community. This was particularly evident in the improvement in ability of Labour party candidates to attract transfers.

The by-elections showed that we have strength in depth in the 2 of the seats where we have TD’s and that we can compete to regain seats we have previously held in the others.

To everyone who showed up to a leaflet drop or a canvass, who shared or liked the campaigns on social media, who made online donations and who canvassed by phone, email or in person, all the support was much appreciated by the Candidates, the party, and the local constituency members.

As with any campaign a review will be conducted to assess what worked well and what we could do better, however I have no doubt that the results demonstrated the impact a positive energetic campaign can have on results locally and the knock on effect on the party nationally.

Our job now is to work across the whole country to deliver similar gains in the next general election. If you want to volunteer, email [email protected] and we can make sure you are linked in with your nearest campaign.
