Improving access and management in hospitals

Overcrowding of A&Es and long waiting lists are symptoms of a system that requires better organisation and more people.

Labour in Government has overseen the establishment of the hospital groups, the Emergency Department Taskforce and the new state-of-the-art National Children’s Hospital

Our plan for the next five years:

  • Provide more locations of care for less serious injuries to ease the burden on our A&Es
  • Increase the number of hospital beds by 1,500
  • Recruit an additional 500 consultants, 2,800 nurses, 300 specialist nursing staff and 1,990 additional health staff
  • Establish new clinical programmes for speedier diagnosis and treatment, starting with cancer and neurosurgery
  • Reform work practices and allocation of staff within hospitals to ensure systemic change in how discharges are dealt with
  • Review the pay and working conditions within hospitals to ensure better retention of staff
  • Reform the planning, management and board membership of hospitals to ensure a more accountable, effective system
