Labour Party Education spokesperson Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has congratulated the Leaving Certificate class of 2017 on receiving their results.

Senator Ó Ríordáin commented:

“Today marks an important milestone in many young people’s lives as they receive their Leaving Certificate results. Today represents the culmination of many years of hard work for students and their families.

“I also want to congratulate that several hundred adults who returned to education and sat their Leaving Certificate. To return to complete a further course at a later stage in life is to be celebrated.

“The dramatic fall in the failure rate of maths cannot be ignored. Through Labour’s 2011 national literacy and maths strategy, we have seen the first improvement in these skills in a generation.

“Not everyone will be happy with results today but it is very important for students to keep everything in perspective. Those disappointed should use the supports that are available to discuss their options. The world doesn’t end with the Leaving Certificate.

“Parents and students are reminded that the National Parents’ Council Leaving Certificate Helpline is available to them on 1800 265 165.

“Students should also remember today’s results are merely a signpost in their lives. If anyone is disappointed, there are always other roads to take, which often prove to be better in the end.”
