Independent Alliance only concerned for own seats

Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has said in reaction to this afternoon’s comments by the Independent Alliance that it is clear their only concern is retaining their own seats, instead of asking for answers to the outstanding questions on justice issues.

Senator Ó Ríordáin said:

“This afternoon the Independent Alliance has called for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to pull back from the brink of an election.

“It is extraordinary that TDs who have built their careers campaigning against injustices are now content to sit back and not ask any questions about the controversy that brought us to this point.

“Despite assertions by Shane Ross today, this crisis is not simply about the communications of the discovery of an email but much deeper concerns about what was known about the strategy pursued by An Garda Síochána at the O’Higgins Commission and why the Minister did not react to what was brought to her attention.

“The Independent Alliance Ministers are clearly concerned about only their seats and positions following a calamitous few weeks where they sought to visit North Korea.

“In an election, Independent Alliance Ministers will be forced to defend why after 20 months they have so few achievements to their name.

“Their key priorities and pet projects have not been realised – from reform of judicial appointments, to the ratification of the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to the provision of cardiac care in the South East; and they know the public will know judge them on their failed tenure in a snap election.”
