Labour LGBT welcomes gender recognition report

19 July 2018

Labour LGBT welcomes the recommendations of the Gender Recognition Review Report, with its emphasis on equality and self-determination.

Co-chair of Labour LGBT Karl Hayden said:

“The report is important to young trans, non-binary and intersex people but also includes useful suggestions that could make life easier for all age groups. We call for the recommendations in the report to be implemented by the government.

“We welcome the report’s recommendation that all young people should be able to self-determine their gender identity, with the support of their families. It is of particular significance that non-binary people are recognised and respected in the report.”

Co-chair of Labour LGBT Aoife Leahy added:

“The simple addition of a serial number to Gender Recognition Certificates would make life easier for trans people. The report shows that the smallest of details can be of great importance, and that all Gender Recognition legislation should be reviewed regularly.”
