Ireland needs to make Spinraza decision ASAP

15 May 2019

Labour Party Health spokesperson Alan Kelly TD has said the HSE should follow the UK’s lead and approve the funding of Spinraza.

Deputy Kelly said:

“It is time for the HSE to follow the lead of our neighbours in the NHS and sanction the funding of the life-changing drug Spinraza.

“Families across Ireland have been crying out for the Government to make this drug available to people with spinal muscular atrophy.

“The fact that this drug has now been approved by our nearest neighbours will give many people hope, the HSE need to make their decision on whether they are going to approve the funding of this drug sooner rather than later.

“Ireland is now one of the only countries in the European Union to have not approved this drug. We need to do right by the small number of families whose loved ones have this debilitating condition.”
