Posted on March 01, 2007 at 03:16 PM
With an election coming in the coming weeks/months it is important to ensure you are registered to vote, particularly given the fact that tens of thousands of people were disenfranchised by being taken off the electoral registers, including our own Jack Wall TD. (Check out what the Irish Times and Irish Independent had to say on the issue, subscription required.)
From decisions on our health service to whether your area gets additional community policing, voting is an important way of having your say on issues that affect you. If you don't vote, you run a great risk of your opinion becoming irrelevant - it is simply not being heard by those who are making the decisions. However, by using your vote you are helping to decide who will make decisions on your behalf.
While inclusions on the electoral register closed before Christmas, there is still time to be included through the Supplementary Register.
To see that you are still entitled to vote, go to Check the Register, submit your name and address. You can also phone the Franchise office in your local authority. And don't forget that family members who turned 18 years old in February 2007 are also entitled to vote in the forthcoming election so it is important to ensure they are also included.
Inclusion in the Supplementary Register ceases 15 days before polling day. You can find out more information here.
