Labour's 10-point plan for Dublin
Posted on April 16, 2007 at 04:58 PM
Dublin is the third most visited capital in Europe, after Paris and London and has spearheaded the growth of the thriving Irish economy. Dublin is no longer the town we all knew so well, but we have yet to make it a great city.
Across the greater Dublin area we have housing estates with hundreds of new homes that have been built with no shops, schools, doctors, childcare, public transport, recreational facilities, or job opportunities nearby.
Many parents cannot find a place for their children in a school and young parents find that they are forced to spend more time in the car than with their children.
Dublin can do better. Dublin has all the ingredients to become a great European city.
A city that is an engine of economic growth, but it also a great place to live and work.
A place to bring up children, and to grow old in the company of your friends.
A city of artists and artisans, of science and nature.
A literary city, where literacy is the birthright of all.
A city you can move around easily, and feel safe doing it.
A city that is a launching pad from which our people will go out to explore the world, and to which they can return to find jobs and a decent quality of life.
Yesterday we launched our 10-point plan for Dublin which when implemented will make a real difference to the lives of Dubliners.
These include:
Getting Dublin Moving: 500 more buses, and a €1 standard fare
A First Class Health Service for Dubliners: More beds, in clean hospitals, tackle the A&E crisis and put in place 600 new public community care beds in Dublin
Keeping Dublin Safe: More community Gardai, serving people they know in communities they know. Tackle the gangland criminals head on.
