Nationalise the banks

Posted on May 12, 2009 at 07:36 PM

Once again the issue of the banks was raised by the Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore during Leaders' Questions this afternoon when he called on the Government to nationalise the banks.

Eamon said: "How the Government deals with the banks is going to determine the future of the Irish economy and the future of this country. It is quite clear the attempts to date have not succeeded.

"There is an alternative, which is contained in the motion the Labour Party has proposed for debate in Private Members' business tonight. It is that the banks be temporarily nationalised, cleaned up and put back in order.

"Will the Taoiseach not accept that, given all that has happened, and that the steps taken to date to deal with the banking crisis have not succeeded, he should now bow to the inevitable and agree to the proposal the Labour Party is putting tonight, that the banks be taken into public ownership for the period necessary to clean them up and get them back to order?

The accompanying You Tube video shows Eamon's contribution to today's proceedings while the full debate from today's Leaders' Questions is available on the Oireachtas website.
