Euro stars

Last night we were at the edges of our seat watching the drama unfold in the Ireland South count which returned Senator Alan Kelly as MEP with 64,152 votes while earlier in the evening in Punchestown Nessa Childers was deemed elected with 74,666 votes. Alan and Nessa managed to take the two seats in Ireland South and Ireland East, the first Labour seats in the two areas since 1979.
Both Alan and Nessa's fantastic results followed sitting MEP Proinsias De Rossa who was returned in the early hours of Monday morning with 83,471 votes. In the North West count Susan O'Keeffe who didn't get a seat but managed through her hard fought campaign to increase Labour's vote in the constituency from 3.31% to 5.79%. So well done to all our Euro candidates and their teams for all their hard work.
In the Local Elections count the final number of Labour councillors stands at 132 making this Local Election Labour's best ever.
