Gilmore slams proposal for farcical Dáil sittings
Posted on June 03, 2010 at 04:09 PM
"Let me call this what it is, namely, pretence that the Dáil will be doing normal business next week. The Government is making a mockery of the Dáil and is running away from its responsibilities," Eamon Gilmore, Leader of the Labour Party told the House this morning.
He was referring to the fact that the outstanding by-elections and referendum on the rights of children were anticipated to be held next week, however, Eamon told the House that the Government does not want to hold the elections as it is "afraid of facing the people".
"It is quite a cynical position on the part of the Government in terms of it being prepared to sacrifice the welfare of children to protect its own political hide."
Eamon objected to the fact that the House will now only sit for a day and a half next week with no oral questions, Order of Businessk, Adjournment debate, Standing Order 32s, Private Members' business or votes.
"That type of order for an entire week's business is arrogant. It shows a Government that is out of touch and that is abusing its majority in the House. It is a muzzling of Parliament.
"The reason for this is that Ministers are going on holidays next week."
