Government has turned its back on the unemployed - Gilmore

Leaders' Questions today saw the Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore TD question the Government's action on jobs saying the Government has turned its back on the unemployed.
"Why is unemployment such a low priority for the Government? What can the Taoiseach say to people who are out of work about when they are likely to get a job again? What specific steps are being taken by the Government to get people back to work?
Earlier this month we saw for the 12th month more than 400,000 on the Live Register. A total of 41 per cent of those out of work are classified as long-term unemployed with one in three young men aged between 20 and 24 years old out of work.
Eamon continued: "We are coming towards the end of this Dáil session. At the very least before we come back in the autumn, will the Government produce a specific strategy aimed at getting people back to work, in particular addressing the needs of the growing number of people who are long-term unemployed and the huge number of young people who are out of work."
Eamon highlighted our policy Just the Job which provides for additional resources to deliver jobs as well as (among other things) training schemes to help people improve their skills. You can download it from our policy section.
