"A Fair and Effective Penal System" policy document was launched this afternoon which argues that our current system is costly, ineffective and has led to grossly overcrowded prisons. The document says that those engaged in serious criminal activity, and persons convicted of crimes of violence and offences against the person must be imprisoned to protect society, but outlines a number of alternatives to custodial sentences in appropriate cases.

Leading the launch was our Justice Spokesperson Pat Rabbitte TD and Senator Ivana Bacik.

"We are publishing this policy paper today because we are not convinced that Ireland's penal policies are not working. We believe that penal policy is an issue where the fair and just policy is also the most effective policy," the Labour Party Spokesperson on Justice Deputy Pat Rabbitte said.

Senator Ivana Bacik speaking at the launch said: "The Government has also displayed an unfortunate tendency to "throw legislation at the problem" of crime, rather than trying to address the practical issues of crime detection and prevention. Their failure to develop a fair and effective penal policy has undermined public confidence in criminal justice policies generally."

Pat and Ivana's statements can be read in full in our media centre while the document can be downloaded from our website policy section.
