It's a good day to be a Labour TD in government - Deputy Gerald Nash

Deputy Gerard Nash

Today is one of those days when I'm delighted to be part of a government with Labour at its heart. Our Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton has published the Bill which will see a €1 hourly increase in the minimum wage after the 1st July.

This measure means a lot to the thousands of people who are struggling to make ends meet; to pay rent and mortgages and to put food on the table for their families.

Only a matter of months ago, FF picked the pockets of some of the lowest paid workers in Ireland to the tune of €40 a week in one of the most shameful examples of robbing the poor to pay for the sins of the rich and greedy that we have seen in decades.

I never quite understood the argument for slashing the incomes of the less well off in Ireland. People who get up and do an honest day's work in the expectation of a decent pay packet at the end of the week.

Yes, it is a long way back and our recovery will take time. But for us, we always have the time to put the interests of people who work for a living first.

And today is one of those days where we can all be proud of the decisions we are choosing to take in government.
