Budget 2013 brings in €500m in taxes on wealth

Difficult challenges are ahead of us but Ireland will prosper again - Howlin

Addressing the Dáil, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin said: "This Government continues to face a daunting challenge in repairing the economy and the public finances. Difficult decisions are still required. We are committed to meeting that challenge, and are confident that through good government we can lead Ireland back to independent funding and back to sustainable growth in living standards and in employment."

Yesterday members of the Labour Party, TDs, Senators, MEPs and Cllrs gathered in Clonmel to mark the centenary of the Labour Party which was established in Clonmel in 1912. Labour stands ready to legislate

Last night Minister of State Kathleen Lynch spoke in the Dáil about the publication of the Expert Group report on the A, B and C v Ireland judgement saying that Labour stands ready to legislate. You can see what she said in the accompanying video or read her speech which is detailed below. You can read the report at this link.

I wish to thank Deputy Daly and her colleagues for raising this important matter in the Dáil and for their valuable work in attempting to frame this complex legal and medical issue in a legislative proposal.

Expert Group report published

The Expert Group report on the A, B and C v Ireland judgement by the ECHR published today by the Govenrment not only fulfilled a commitment made in the programme for Government but also outlined a timeline for action. This issue has been ongoing for 20 years and this is the first Government that has decided to deal with this sensitive issue properly.

Rabbitte, Costello, Lyons and Swoboda launch Youth Guarantee billboard campaign

Today Minister Pat Rabbitte, Dublin MEP Emer Costello, Deputy John Lyons and Hannes Swoboda MEP, Leader of the Socialists and Democrats Group (European Parliament) launched a campaign calling for the introduction of a Youth Guarantee.

The Youth Guarantee is a European wide campaign which would see young people who are out of formal education or employment for more than four months, being offered a job, training or education placement.

Emer Costello MEP said: "Unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, is the biggest challenge facing Ireland right now - we risk losing an entire generation with almost one-third of young Irish people and nearly one-quarter across Europe currently without work, many for a year or more."

Doing nothing is not an option - Lynch tells House

As the Government prepares to publish the report on the Expert Group on the X case next week, the Dáil has been debating a Private Members' motion on the X Case where Minister Kathleen Lynch called for calm saying there is now a solution in our sights and 'we should do this properly'.

She said: "The solution is within our grasp and we can do this properly... We need to act because as the Tánaiste said doing nothing is not an option." Deputy Ciara Conway spoke of how Labour is the only party to have asked for legislation to end the inequality and mistreatment of women's health in our manifestos from 2002 and each one since.
