The Tom Johnson Summer School is taking place this year in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny, from June 29th - July 1st.

The Summer School is hosted by Labour Youth for all party members and it is widely regarded as the most enjoyable weekend of the party's calendar with some live music, panel discussions and a semi-formal Dinner on the Saturday evening.

This being our centenary year, the theme for this year's Summer School is 'The Challenges for Our Next One Hundred Years'. We will open our discussions with a session reflecting on the first one hundred years of the Irish Labour Party, followed by a keynote speech on the history of European Socialism by Professor Donald Sassoon, author of One Hundred Years of Socialism: The West European Left in the Twentieth Century.

On Saturday, we'll discuss three of the biggest challenges facing social democracy at home and abroad: employment, reform of the financial system, and the challenge of upholding social justice in a time of austerity. Our speakers on Saturday will include Ministers Joan Burton, Brendan Howlin and Joe Costello, alongside academics and speakers from the Trade Union movement.

A semi-formal dinner will take place on Saturday evening, where the Jim Kemmy 'Thirst for Justice' Prize 2012 will be presented this year to the Travellers' Rights organisation Pavee Point.

On Sunday, we'll turn our attention to the Euro crisis and the fate of Social Europe, opening with a session on 'Re-imagining Social Europe', followed by a discussion of left cooperation in EU politics.

Bookings can be made at this link and if you've any queries please just drop me a line via return email or phone. Participation fee, including the dinner, is €50.
