As part of National Bike Week, the Minister for Public and Commuter Transport, Alan Kelly TD today got on his bike to promote cycling as affordable, healthy and eco-friendly form of transport for the young and old.

The pupils of St. Mary's Boys National School in Booterstown helped Minister Kelly launch 'National Cycle to School Day' and like thousands of children across Ireland, they cycled into school to mark the day.

Proving that it's not just child's play, Minister Kelly will also mark 'National Bike to Work Day' by leading a lunch-time cycle in the city centre.

Promoting the benefits of cycling Minister Kelly said, "Not only will cycling benefit your pocket, it also has positive benefits for your health and on traffic congestion. This week is all about getting people on their bikes and there are a range of imaginative events to appeal to everyone right across Ireland this week that I hope people of all ages will join in with."

Deputy Sean Kenny also encouraged cyclists of every level to get involved this week saying: "details of all these events in every county are available on a dedicated website which, among other things, contains information on individual bike week events as details become available, tips, including an instructional video on maintaining your bike as well as advice on how to promote cycling in the workplace and in schools."
