Labour Youth has the fastest growing youth organisation in Ireland. The Leader of the Labour Party, Deputy Joan Burton, Tánaiste & Minister for Social Protection, is continuing to renew Labour in Ireland, and to build an active campaigning organisation in every constituency. Further development of youth membership is a key part of this renewal.

The Labour Party is now seeking to recruit a highly motivated person, with strong organisational skills to take on the role of The Labour Party - Youth & Development Officer.

Labour out in force at the Ploughing

Labour Ministers, TDs, and Senators are decamping to Ratheniska this week for the National Ploughing Championships.

The Labour Party stand will host a series of events and meetings throughout the three days.

On the Tuesday, Minister for Rural Affairs, Ann Phelan, is teaming up with Bobby Kerr from Dragon’s Den and David Fitzsimons from Retail Excellence Ireland to launch a new report on boosting rural towns and villages. The report ‘A Strategy for Rural Retailing’, looks to bring citizens, businesses and customers together to reinvigorate their town or village.

Freshers go red as Labour Youth’s recruitment campaign kicks off

It’s that time of year again when colleges welcome thousands of fresh faced and enthusiastic new students to their campuses! Starting college as a fresher is a bit of a rollercoaster, between the excitement and nerves, new courses, unfamiliar surroundings, meeting new people, and the choice of so many different clubs and societies to join, it really is an exciting time.

For many students, it can be the first time to get a taste of political activism! Labour Youth’s national recruitment campaign is well and truly in full swing. Last week we signed up hundreds of new members in University College Cork and NUI Galway.

Kelly campaign kicks into gear

On Monday night, Labour activists, representatives and senior Ministers gathered in Durkin’s in Ballaghaderreen to kick-off Senator John Kelly’s bid for the Dáil. John is the Labour Party candidate in the upcoming Roscommon-South Leitrim by-election.

Tánaiste and Labour Leader Joan Burton, and Deputy Leader Minister Alan Kelly both addressed the packed room to rally the troops and get John’s campaign formally underway.

€23m cash boost for social housing

Social housing got a boost on Friday, when Environment Minister Alan Kelly announced a further €23million to deal with a range of issues such as housing adaptation and energy efficiency.

€15million will be targeted at important energy works such as improving attic and wall insulation. This will make local authority homes warmer and more comfortable for tenants, as well as creating jobs in the green economy.

He said: “As a result of the further €15 million for energy retrofitting works to social houses, I expect to see over 4,000 houses becoming warmer homes, with reduced fuel bills this winter.”

Labour standing up for locked out Greyhound workers

Over the last few months Labour Party representatives have condemned the lockout of Greyhound Recycling and Recovery workers since June 17th this year.

Local Labour TD Robert Dowds said: “It is totally unacceptable that the Greyhound workers are locked out of their jobs, and it is even worse that the company are hiring non-unionised agency staff to replace them. It is an attack on the pay and conditions of every PAYE worker in the state and I would urge people to support the Greyhound workers in their ongoing campaign”.

Minister Kevin Humphreys kicks off Nationwide Tour

As the new Minister for Labour Activation, Kevin Humphreys is tasked with helping jobseekers get access to the best quality training, education and activation schemes including Community Employment and JobBridge, so they can get the position they want.

He has embarked on a natiowide tour, to start a national conversation about activation schemes. Over the next couple of months, he will travel the country, talking to employment and community groups, and see first-hand the excellent work that’s being done in such centres. He’ll hear the views of frontline staff and jobseekers on how the different schemes are working, and where they can be improved for the benefit of jobseekers.

Leaving Cert students get the thumbs up from Jan

Today Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan, was in Limerick to present Leaving Cert students at St. Nessan’s Community College with their exam results.

Jan congratulated all 56,990 students around the country who received their results today, and spoke about it being a ‘milestone’ for the students:

Completing secondary school and the Leaving Certificate is a milestone in many people’s lives. Every student should be proud of their achievement. Today is the culmination of much hard work and sacrifice and I hope that the effort students made is reflected in their results.”

Jan also mentioned the fantastic progress being made, with the number of students taking Higher Level Maths up from 16% in 2011 to 27% this year. She wished students the very best for their future:

We're hiring

Senator Lorraine Higgins is hiring a new Secretarial Assistant to work in her constituency offices in Loughrea and in Athenry. The role will involve administrative organisation of constituency office affairs including a full range of secretarial duties and direct communication with constituents/correspondents. This is a busy and demanding role, which requires a high degree of confidentiality and sensitivity, flexibility and keen personal initiative.

Meet Cllr Pamela Kearns - our Dublin South West byelection candidate

Last night members of the Labour Party gathered in the Plaza Hotel in Tallaght to select our candidate, Cllr Pamela Kearns, in the forthcoming Dublin South West byelection.

Pamela was first elected to South Dublin County Council in 2009 and was returned again in May's Local Elections. You can find out more about Pamela from her webpage.
