Minister Jan O’Sullivan has welcomed an additional 610 special needs assistant posts for schools available from this September representing an 11.7% increase since this Government came into office.

“Every child with an assessed care need will receive access to SNA support. This is an important principle and will continue in the 2015/16 school year. To achieve that goal I received sanction from Cabinet for up to an additional 610 SNA posts for allocation to schools from September,” Minster O’Sullivan said.

From September there will be 11,820 whole-time SNA posts available in our primary and post-primary schools; an increase of 11.7% since the Government came into office.

In addition to allocating the additional posts Minister Jan O’Sullivan’s department has issued a circular regarding the employment of SNAs, which addresses concerns about casualization and low hour contracts, to give SNAs greater stability and a better chance of a full hours contract.
