Senator Bacik launches Oireachtas cyclists group

Senator Bacik launches Oireachtas cyclists group

Senator Ivana Bacik got on her bike today to launch a new All-Party Oireachtas Cyclists Group. The group will encourage all parliamentarians to leave their cars at home and cycle to work.

In tandem with the Government's Smarter Travel policy which aims to have 10% of all commuting trips carried out by bike nationally in Ireland by 2020, the All-Party Oireachtas Cyclists Group hopes to encourage people to cycle, by tackling issues which may prevent nervous cyclists from making the journey.

Senator Bacik said, "The reason why many people do not cycle is because they are concerned about the experience of cycling in congested traffic and do not have the cycling skills to cycle safely in urban areas."

Minister Kelly launches National Journey Planner

The National Transport Authority's new online National Journey planner was launched today by Minister Alan Kelly and Gerry Murphy, Chief Executive for the National Transport Authority. The planner app, which is available for Android and iPhones (iPhone app will be available shortly), covers bus, rail, tram, taxis, ferries and walking with fully mapped out route information, printable timetables and details of overall journey times - all in one place. It will enable people to plan journeys from door-to-door, anywhere in Ireland, using public transport.

Minister Alan Kelly and Moneygall's Henry Healy (Barack Obama's cousin) have joined forces to call for a YES vote in the forthcoming Stability Treaty referendum.

Henry Healy said: 'The only way forward for our country is to ratify the treaty. To ensure growth, jobs and prosperity for our future a Yes is the only way to secure it. It will be that simple; a Yes vote will continue our recovery and lead us back to a more stable nation within the EU'.

Kelly's CAP conference ignites CAP debate

97% of farmers believe that CAP is of major or vital importance to Irish agriculture but over 90% of them also believe the future of CAP will have a negative impact. That's accordingto results of a survey carried out by Alan Kelly MEP.

Kelly revealed the survey results at the "Future of CAP, Crisis or Opportunity for Rural Ireland" conference which took place on Friday, March 26th at the Tipperary Institute, Thurles.
The conference, the first of its kind in Ireland saw attendees from all across Ireland gather at the Tipperary venue to hear speakers including Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore and IFA President, John Bryan, discuss the future of CAP for Irish farmers.

Introducing Alan Kelly MEP Ireland South

June's European Elections saw three MEPs elected for Labour. Proinsias De Rossa was returned in the Dublin constituency, while two new MEPs, Alan Kelly for Munster/ Ireland South and Nessa Childers for Leinster/ Ireland East, will be joining Proinsias in the Parliament.

To introduce you to our new MEPs, we will be profiling both Alan and Nessa and first up is Alan.

Alan is a native of Portroe in North Tipperary, a very rural area, but a Labour Party heartland. His election this year ended a 25 years period where there was no Labour MEP in the area.
