Cllr Eoin Holmes votes in the Meath East byelection

Today the voters of Meath East go to the polls to vote in the byelection and last night the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said our candidate Eoin Holmes is an experienced businessman and community activist and ‘can make a valuable contribution in government’. The Tánaiste added that Eoin ‘stands head and shoulders above all the other candidates’.

During the campaign Labour Party members, Labour Ministers and members of the Parliamentary party came to Meath East to canvas for Eoin in particularly harsh weather conditions. Since yesterday afternoon alone 23,550 leaflets have been delivered by the Labour teams to households in Meath East.

We are very proud to have Eoin as our candidate and also very proud of our members who turned out day after day to canvas.

Holmes and Bacik launch Labour's Marriage Equality Bill

This morning we were in Meath East with our byelection candidate Cllr Eoin Holmes and Senator Ivana Bacik launching our Marriage Equality Bill.

The Civil Registration (Marriage Equality) Bill will remove a specific reference to gender from the legislation that faciltiates civil marriages.

Speaking about the Bill Cllr Eoin Holmes said: "Gay and lesbian people in Ireland have been to the fore in bringing about social change through their courage in coming forward and bring true to themselves." He called on voters in the Meath East byelection to vote for a 'more modern, liberal and tolerant Ireland' by giving their support to Labour.

Cllr Eoin Holmes selected as Labour's candidate in Meath East byelection

Following on from Friday’s Meath East Byelection selection convention which saw Cllr Eoin Holmes formally selected as the Labour Party candidate, canvassing began at a pace on Saturday morning.

Speaking after his selection Cllr Holmes said he fully supported Labour’s focus in Government on addressing the jobs crisis and how, as a small business owner, he is aware of the challenges faced by those trying to create and sustain employment in the current economic climate.

“I am not a political insider,” Cllr Holmes said. “Rather I have real life experience, running my own small business and trying to keep it operating in the worst of economic circumstances.”

Cllr. Patrick Nulty the Labour candidate in the upcoming by-election in Dublin West has handed in his nomination papers to the Dublin City returning officer.

Cllr. Nulty has been a hard working and vocal voice in the community of Dublin 15 for the last number of years, raising issues in relation to anti-social behaviour, school places, housing waiting lists and the provision of jobs. He has also served the community on the Blanchardstown Local Drugs Task Force, the Blanchardstown Community Policing Forum as well as the Riversdale Community College Board of Management.
