Labour makes good on election promise to upgrade IT in schools

Today's announcement of the rollout of high speed broadband for all second level schools follows Labour's commitment in our election manifesto to upgrade IT in schools.

Minister Pat Rabbitte and Minister Ruairi Quinn announced the national roll-out which will see all schools being connected by 2014. It follows a successful pilot project involving 78 second-level schools where the use of broadband has been shown to have improved both teaching and learning.

Welcoming the roll-out the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn said: "We need to ensure that appropriate digital technology and high-speed internet are in place in our schools as a basic building block to deliver a 21st century learning experience to all learners."

Minister Rabbitte and the Wheel to develop digital TV outreach programme

The Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte TD has announced an agreement with the Wheel, a national voluntary organisation, to operate a community outreach digital switchover programme which will provide additional assistance and advice at community level to those who may find the move to digital TV difficult.

The programme aims to ensure that everybody is made aware of the switchover and that no TV viewers are left without a TV service when the switchover from analogue to digital takes place on October 24th.

Minister Rabbitte said he is delighted to be working with the Wheel and that it is encouraging to see the level of support offered by the organisations during the switchover period.

Pat Rabbitte TD, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources today announced funding of a total of €1.88m for 20 training projects in a variety of community and voluntary groups and not for profit organisations under the Benefit 3 scheme.

The funding was announced at the Silver Surfer Awards which was sponsored by Google in conjunction with Age Action. The awards were given to people over the age of 50 who had interesting stories on how they began to use technology, be it on the internet or on their mobile phone.

Rabbitte launches scheme for rural broadband

A scheme which aims to ensure that broadband access is provided to premises in rural Ireland by the end of 2012 has been announced today by Minister Pat Rabbitte.

The scheme, carried out in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food under the Rural Development Programme co-funded by the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development, aims to identify the remaining individual premises in rural Ireland that are unable to get a broadband service.

"My Department will be accepting applications for a three month period starting now, so there will be ample opportunity for people to come forward with details of premises that cannot obtain a service," Minister Rabbitte said.

The Unite 4 Our Planet forum takes place this Saturday, February 9th, in Dublin's Mansion House from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

A number of speakers will address the forum including the Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Anne Carter, Brendan Halligan, Chair of Sustainable Energy Ireland, Deputies Joanna Tuffy, Liz McManus and Tommy Broughan as well as Senator Dominic Hannigan. In the afternoon a guest panel comprising Oisin Coughlan, Pat Finnegan and John Sweeney will address the forum and take a Q+A session afterwards.

In the build-up to the General Election using the web as a forum of communication became somewhat common place with some political parties adopting the strategy more than others. Labour is proud to have been at the forefront of this utilising all the technologies the web has to offer. We are even more proud that one of our frontrunning bloggers Councillor Eric Byrne has won an award for his vlogging over the election, recognising his work in the medium.

Eric and indeed Councillor Dominic Hannigan regularly posted videos to accompany their blog posts and both were nominated in the competition.
