Labour launch Civil Unions Bill to the Dail

Love is gender blind

The introduction last night of Labour's Civil Union's Bill during Private Members' Time in the Dail was one of the most exciting in the House in recent years. To a packed gallery, a rousing speech was given by Labour Justice spokesperson Brendan Howlin, followed by subsequent speeches by other members of the party.

Commending the Bill to the House Brendan said: "There are many Irish citizens in stable long-term partnerships who are denied legal recognition, who are denied the protections and rights of loving couples simply because of their gender.

“We must recognise the full human equality of all our people… We must do it for the single and fundamental reason that it is the right thing to do.”

This quote from Robert Kennedy made in 1966 is at the very core of Labour’s A Fair Deal policy. Labour has proposed a comprehensive policy to make sure that all our people can benefit from our recent economic success. We have set out a range of measures designed to allow those who have been left behind to get a fair chance. Our ambition in Government is to continue our economic prosperity while making sure that all get a chance to fully benefit.
