Labour delivers for families in mortgage difficulties

Today Labour honoured another promise to families in mortgage difficulties with the launch of the 'mortgage to rent' scheme by the Minister for Housing and Planning Deputy Jan O'Sullivan.

The scheme is specifically targeted at the low-income families whose mortgage situation is unsustainable and where there is little or no prospect of a significant change in circumstances in the foreseeable future.

Minister O'Sullivan explained how some families have been caught in a 'perfect storm' with their mortgage repayments having purchased when prices were much higher and since then have suffered a significant drop in family income.

Stability Treaty canvas continues at apace

Canvassing for the Stability Treaty is continuing at apace with Labour members and reps knocking on doors all over the country to secure a Yes vote in the forthcoming vote. We spoke to a few of our TDs to find out how the canvas in their areas is going. Minister Joe Costello is going door to door every night and all weekend. He said: "The response on the doors has been very good and very positive, people are pleased to see us and like to be asked about how they vote. They have been very willing to engage in the arguments around the Stability Treaty. It has been a great and positive experience."

Junior Minister appointments announced

Speaking after her appointment today as Super Junior Minister Jan O'Sullivan said her priorities in the post are addressing homelessness and alleviating the stresses of families who are struggling to meet their mortgages.

Minister Jan O'Sullivan was appointed from her previous position of Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs with responsibility for Trade and Employment to Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government with special responsibility for Housing and Planning. Minister O'Sullivan's appointment means she will now be a member of Cabinet.

"The Government has made significant progress in getting the country back on the road to economic recovery. I look forward to working with my Cabinet colleagues in continuing that work," Minister O'Sullivan said.

Labour's Plan for Fair Health Care

"Labour in government will introduce Universal Primary Care Insurance for every citizen by 2014," said Jan O'Sullivan TD at the launch of Labour's Plan for Fair Health Care.

"At the same time Labour will end the two tier system in hospital care so that everyone has the same access to treatment through a Universal Hospital Care Insurance system by 2016."

Alongside Cllr John Gilroy, one of Labour's candidates in Cork North Central, and Cllr Pat Cody, one of the party's candidates in Wexford, she presented a bold new vision to rebuild healthcare in Ireland.

Forum on Universal Health Insurance

Over the next couple of weeks we will be hosting two public forums, one to be held this weekend entitled 'Universal Health Insurance' and the next on February 9th entitled 'Unite 4 our planet' which asks if an integrated approach can help tackle climate change (more on that later in this post).

This weekend's forum will be chaired by our Health Spokesperson Deputy Jan O'Sullivan in Dublin's Mansion House beginning at 10.30am and finishing up at 1.30pm.

The forum will be of particular relevance to anybody with an interest in or involved with the health services.
