"We are looking at specific plans we have for delivering growth by developing our broadband infrastructure, the Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore said today launching Labour's Plan for Digital Ireland.

"Next-generation broadband is an essential component of our economic recovery. The availability of high speed broadband is crucial for business and job creation, as well as being key to attracting outside investment."

The failure of Fianna Fáil Governments over the past decade to roll out adequate connectivity has left Ireland languishing well behind our international competitors in the broadband stakes:

  • Ireland currently ranks 22nd out of 30 countries in the OECD for Broadband access.
  • Ireland's 16-24 year olds rank 26th out of 27 in the EU for regular use of the Internet.

"Job creation and getting our people back to work will be an absolute priority for Labour in government. Nothing summarises the failure of Fianna Fail more than their record on unemployment, the Labour Leader, Eamon Gilmore TD said this afternoon launching our latest policy, Labour's Plan for Enterprise, Innovation and Growth.

"The plan we are launching here today outlines Labour's proposals for a coherent jobs and enterprise strategy that will get a grip on the unemployment problem and drive economic growth... Unemployment and job creation has to receive the priority that it deserves. Labour in government will ensure that this happens."

How many more people will lose their jobs before the Taoiseach loses his?

The damning ESRI report that was released today estimates that 102,800 jobs will be lost next year, and the unemployment rate will average 16.8 per cent. The Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore raised the report during Leaders' Questions today saying 'how many more people will lose their jobs before the Taoiseach loses his?

Deputy Gilmore said: "The Taoiseach simply does not accept this reality. He seems to be in absolute denial that outside the walls and gates of this parliamentary area, people are losing their jobs and businesses are going to the wall.
