Labour Youth National Conference

Posted on November 09, 2010

Last weekend, well over 100 young activists gathered in NUI Maynooth for Labour Youth's National Conference.

Among the motions agreed were support for the extension of voting rights to 16 year olds, Labour's Strategic Investment Bank and a boycott of Israel, and opposition to further internet regulation, water charges and stag hunting. As well as policy debates, key speakers at the Conference were Emmet Stagg TD and Eamon Gilmore TD, while workshops were held on topics such as running Student Union elections and Seanad Reform.

Over the course of the weekend, a new National Youth Executive was also elected, with 18-year-old Colm Lawless from Dublin South-West becoming the youngest ever chair of Labour Youth. Speaking after the Conference, Colm said "We all live in a society that is inherently based on an unequal distribution of wealth and resources. The present government is intent on pursuing policies that are attacking the living standards of ordinary people."

"We have a challenge ahead of us in the coming year to present a socialist alternative to the current crisis. With the highest recorded number of delegates to a youth conference, we are in the strongest position that we've ever held. Now is the time to increase our activism to new heights and fight for a better future for all."

Tomorrow is a big day for our 55,000 Leaving Certificate students with the release of the Leaving Cert exam results.

To highlight the lack of opportunities available for those students Labour Youth today organised a demonstration at the Dáil.

Speaking at the event, the chairperson of Labour Youth Rory Geraghty said: "Since this recession began the government has made no serious effort to invest in job creation or education and training. We have seen many of the allowances available for Third Level students slashed, we've seen the availability of college courses decrease and we've watched the introduction of Third Level fees by stealth.

Rory Geraghty is the Chair of Labour Youth and here he posts about their pre-Budget submission which was released today.

Today we're launching a pre-budget submission to tackle Youth Unemployment.

Since taking office, this government has watched unemployment amongst under 25s treble. Currently Ireland has over 100,000 young people who cannot find work and who are not in full-time education.

Within this, the rate is a shocking 36.4% of people aged 15-19 and 23% between the ages of 20-24.

Cutting social welfare payments for U25s is not the answer. Already too many young people are struggling to survive on what little they have.

Throughout this week Labour Youth has organised a health week on college campuses to highlight the crisis in our health service and the dangers of going down the privatisation route in our hospitals.

Among the various events organised over the week there will be public meetings with Labour TDs on campus and the screening of a film about the state of health care in the US.

Enda Duffy, Chairperson of Labour Youth, said: "It is a national scandal that Ireland despite years of economic boom has a rapidly deteriorating health service. Labour Youth is calling for taxpayer's money to be invested in a universal health system that is free at the point of access."
