Prendergast will stand up for Ireland - Gilmore

Yesterday TDs, Ministers, Senators, Councillors and party members from all over Ireland South gathered in Cork to endorse Phil Prendergast MEP as Labour’s candidate in the forthcoming European Elections for Ireland South.

With standing room only the Labour Leader and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore described Phil Prendergast MEP as ‘tireless’ ‘influential’ and an ‘excellent representative’.

“Phil has been an excellent representative for the people of Ireland South. She is someone who has, for three years, fought their corner. And I know that Phil, and the Labour Party, is ready to fight again in May – and win.”

Stability Treaty canvas continues at apace

Canvassing for the Stability Treaty is continuing at apace with Labour members and reps knocking on doors all over the country to secure a Yes vote in the forthcoming vote. We spoke to a few of our TDs to find out how the canvas in their areas is going. Minister Joe Costello is going door to door every night and all weekend. He said: "The response on the doors has been very good and very positive, people are pleased to see us and like to be asked about how they vote. They have been very willing to engage in the arguments around the Stability Treaty. It has been a great and positive experience."

Labour Women launch Stability Treaty Yes campaign

This morning Labour Women launched their Stability Treaty Yes campaign attended by the Labour Deputy Leader Joan Burton, MEPs Emer Costello, Phil Prendergast and Nessa Childers as well as other members of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

Minister Burton spoke of how there is a 'big advantage' of staying the course in Europe.

"Ireland is not alone in its current troubles. Bank debts and unemployment haunt many European economies. There is a lot more to be done to help beleaguered countries. I believe we are far better off making the case along with like-minded Governments inside the European tent than being a lone voice outside.
