"One in 10 primary school children - that is 50,000 pupils - have serious literacy problems. Radical action to break this plateau is long-overdue. Literacy is the foundation on which education is built. If we don't get that right, all of our subsequent investment in education is compromised," the Labour Party Spokesperson on Education, Deputy Ruairi Quinn, said this afternoon at the launch of Labour's policy document 'Reading as a Right'.

"Labour's literacy strategy is based on the best evidence of what works and we will be ready to begin implementing it from our first day in Government."
