Saturday morning - Tom Johnson Summer School

In our latest blog post from the Tom Johnson Summer School, Labour Youth member Shane Folan writes about this morning's panel 'Preparing our Young People for the future - Rethinking education'. We'll have more shortly. 

The first panel on the Saturday morning was on the topic of Preparing our Young People for the Future – Rethinking Education. John Lyons TD opened up the discussion. He outlined what he felt should be the next steps for the education system here in Ireland; in particular the third level system. He felt university courses should be more skill based in conjunction with the class time that students would normally face. This system is used quite heavily in DCU, and has proved successful in numerous cases.

This weekend see's the 19th Tom Johnson Summer School taking place in Cork. We spoke earlier to Minister of State Kathleen Lynch about the Summer School and you can see what she said in the accompanying video.

The theme of the weekend is 'Lock-Out to Left-Out' with a wide range of speakers including Frances Byrne from OPEN, Rosaleen McDonagh, Traveller and Disability Rights activist, Padraig Yeates, Historian and author of 'Lockout:Dublin 1913'.

Friday's keynote speaker will be the president of Labour’s sister party in Canada, Rebecca Blaikie, and other key speakers include Emer Costello MEP, Minister Joan Burton and the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore.

The annual Tom Johnson Summer is taking place this year in Cork on June 14th - June 16th with the theme ‘From Lock Out to Left Out: Focusing the Dialogue Onto Present Day Ireland’.

Among the speakers at this year’s Tom Johnson Summer School will be the President of Canada’s New Democratic Party Rebecca Blaikie, author Padraig Yeates, SIPTU’s Ethel Buckley, BeLongTo’s Michael Barron, disability and Traveller rights’ activist Rosaleen McDonagh, the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and the weekend will be opened by Frances Byrne - CEO of Open. Panel discussions will be held throughout the weekend and the Labour Party archive will be on display.

The Tom Johnson Summer School - are you coming?

The Tom Johnson Summer School is taking place this year in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny, from June 29th - July 1st.

The Summer School is hosted by Labour Youth for all party members and it is widely regarded as the most enjoyable weekend of the party's calendar with some live music, panel discussions and a semi-formal Dinner on the Saturday evening.

Solutions Discussed at Labour's Tom Johnson Summer School

The sun shone upon Kilkenny this weekend as Labour Party members young and old joined together for Labour Youth's annual Tom Johnson Summer School named after the party's first leader. Speakers at the event which was attended by around 100 Labour activists included Michael D Higgins, Minister Brendan Howlin, Deaglán deBreadún (Political Correspondent, Irish Times) and Nat O'Connor (Director of TASC).

EDIT: July 1st 2011 - The Tom Johnson Summer School is happening this weekend, we'll be updating with more news, speeches and photographs from the weekend so do check back. You can also follow Labour Youth on Twitter for the latest happenings over the weekend.

Booking is now underway for the Tom Johnson Summer School (July 1st - July 2nd in Kilkenny). Among the speakers booked for the event is Michael D Higgins, Minister Ruairi Quinn, Minister Brendan Howlin, Deaglán deBreadún (Political Correspondent, Irish Times) and Nat O'Connor (Director of TASC).

Saturday evening will see a dinner with the Labour Leader and An Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore after which he will deliver the annual Jim Kemmy address and present the Jim Kemmy award.

This weekend will see youth members, party members and public representatives of the Labour Party gather in the Set Theatre, Langtons Hotel, Kilkenny for the annual Tom Johnson Summer School. The Tom Johnson Summer School provides an opportunity for party members to debate and discuss ideas and alternative visions for the Labour Party.

The theme for this year is 'Because People Matter Most - Protecting the Social Agenda', and speakers for the weekends will include Cllr. Ann Phelan, Eamon Gilmore TD, Olivia O'Leary, Mark Hennessy of the Irish Times, Joan Burton TD, Suzy Byrne of Maman Poulet (award winning political blogger), Colm O'Gorman of Amnesty International, Party President Michael D. Higgins TD, and many more. Discussions will take place on topics such as Overseas Development Aid and the role of the media in politics today.

While over 120 delegates are already registered, there are still some spaces available - anyone interested can register on the website here. You can also follow the discussion on Twitter using the hashtag #tj10 over the weekend, while many of the speeches will also be uploaded to our media centre over the weekend.

The Way Forward at Tom Johnson

'The Way Forward' is the theme of this year's Tom Johnson summer school which is being held this weekend in Galway in the Menlo Hotel..

As usual there is a packed agenda of speakers and debates with a number of high profile names attending including Pat Rabbitte, Michael D Higgins, Willie Penrose, Jan O'Sullivan, Eamon Gilmore, Joanna Tuffy and Tommy Broughan. Guest speakers will include Jeremy Corbyn, British Labour Party and opponent of the war in Iraq and ICTU General Secretary David Begg.

To give you a flavour of the weekend there will be debates on the future of Labour following the election, Labour in Northern Ireland, migration as well as a discussion on twenty-first century socialism.
