Beware of hard left political choices for general election says Cllr. McNeilis
Issued : Tuesday 25 August, 2015
The ongoing political crisis in Greece should serve as a warning to voters in Ireland for the upcoming general election, according to Labour Cllr. Niall McNeilis.
Cllr. McNeilis said that the ongoing instability in Greece – five elections in six years – reveals much about how extreme left wing parties disintegrate when it comes to managing an economy.
“Voters should take note of what is happening in Greece. Greek outgoing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras promised the moon and the stars when his party was elected to Government a mere seven months ago.
“All that has been achieved in that time is that Syriza has taken Greece to the brink of financial collapse and exit from the euro. That is the legacy of Mr. Tsipras and his Party’s far left agenda.
“Not content with failing to address Greece’s economic instability, the Syriza party has turned on itself, splintering into several more radical factions, not an uncommon trait among Ireland’s far left parties too,” said Cllr. McNeilis.
“I recall noting how I believed Syriza would worsen Greece’s economic performance when they were voted into office as they had no plan other than to bang tables and operate megaphone diplomacy that could only end in failure.
“What makes the whole matter laughable, if it wasn’t so serious for the ordinary people of Greece, was the unedifying presence of Ireland’s hard left tripping themselves over in their efforts to get on the first plane to Greece to hail Syriza’s election success.
“I don’t see Paul Murphy making any return trips to Greece any day soon – I wonder why?” asked Cllr. McNeilis.
