Wicklow County Council must priorise fixture of Glenealy National School Footpaths
Issued : Wednesday 5 March, 2014
Labour Local Election candidate, Paul O’Brien, has urged Wicklow County Council to apply for vital funding to address the dismal state of foot paths surrounding Glenealy National School.
"Following my discussion with Labour Minister for Public Transport, Alan Kelly, he has informed me that funding is annually made available to Wicklow local authority through the Sustainable Transport Grants for the Greater Dublin area. Wicklow County Council received €2.3 million this year to address a number of issues - but failed to apply for funding to fix the foot paths surrounding Glenealy National School.
"I am urging Wicklow County Council not to overlook Glenealy National School and ensure that it is prioritised in the next round of funding. The footpaths leading up to the school, as well as the entrance are of concern to a number of parents walking their young children to school. Walking is the cheapest most environmentally friendly means of transport, and it would be a retrograde step if parents were put off walking because of safety concerns."
