As a member of Louth County Council, I intend to give special priority to national and local issues related to poverty, inequality and social exclusion.
There are over 180,000 children living in poverty in Ireland today. This is an alarming statistic, and given that our future is in the hands of our young people it is one that should not be ignored. I will endevour to ensure that all young people are empowered to develop skills and confidence to fully participate as active citizens in our society.
Research by the Urban Institute in America shows that children can rise above the poverty line during their lives as a result of programmes and policies which support work and help parents to improve their economic standing. It is my goal to use the policies of the Labour Party to promote such programmes and supports for the betterment of our community.
