Labour Women welcomes commencement of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013
20 December 2013
Labour Women welcomes the announcement that the Commencement Order and Regulations for the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 has been signed, with the provisions in the Act to take effect from 1st January 2014.
The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act allows for a termination of a pregnancy to be carried out where there is a real and substantial risk to the life as opposed to the health of the mother and crucially it outlines the processes that will be used to establish whether that risk exists. The legislation provides much needed legal clarity to doctors in Ireland and legal protection to pregnant women in life threatening situations.
Labour Women is proud that the Labour Party has delivered on its commitment to legislate for X during the lifetime of this government. Nearly 22 years after the Supreme Court ruling in the X Case, Ireland is now a safer place for pregnant women.
